Community NHS Eyecare Services

The NHS is transferring some Hospital Eye Services to the community, where patients will be by optometrists in their community optical practices. Service availability is dependent on which services each NHS region has commissioned in their local area. The services the AHPO Eye Centre can deliver, if commissioned locally, will include

  • Urgent Eyecare Service (UES). This provides urgent assessment, treatment or referral for sudden onset eye problems such as flashes, floaters, vision loss or minor eye injuries.
  • Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS). This provides assessment and treatment for people with recently occurring minor eye problems.
  • Glaucoma enhanced referral service (GERS). Patients who are suspected of having glaucoma will be assessed to see if referral to the Hospital Eye Service is needed.
  • Community glaucoma monitoring (OHT). This provides monitoring of patients with mild and stable glaucoma
