Training & background:
Mr Biswas began his ophthalmic surgical training in 1987 in India. He was awarded the Diploma in Ophthalmology in 1989, and in 1990 was awarded the Master of Surgery (M.S.) in Ophthalmology from the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) in Pondicherry, India.
He started his training in United Kingdom in 1991 as a Senior House Officer in ophthalmology, initially at Grimsby District General Hospital and subsequently at the Hull Royal Infirmary as Registrar. From 1997 to 2004 he was a Staff Surgeon at the Royal Preston Hospital, during which time he was a research fellow at the University of Central Lancashire and was awarded a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) for his research into cataractogenesis (how cataracts form). In 2004 he was appointed at the Bristol Eye Hospital Specialist Registrar rotation, during which time he also completed an advanced subspecialty training (ASTO) in glaucoma. In 2009, after completing his Specialist Registrar training, he gained further experience in glaucoma as a post-CCT fellow at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre.
He was appointed to the post of Consultant Ophthalmologist at Queen’s Hospital, Burton on Trent in 2010. He is the lead consultant for glaucoma care and has introduced new glaucoma treatments including all kinds of laser treatment for glaucoma and complex glaucoma surgery including Mitomycin trabeculectomy and i-stent implant surgery. He is responsible for training doctors, being the Educational Supervisor and Royal College of Ophthalmologists trainer at the Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and has trained doctors, nurses and optometrists in glaucoma and general ophthalmic management and care. Mr Biswas brings a wealth of experience to Midlands Eye Care with expertise in cataract surgery including multifocal IOL implants (not available on the NHS). Besides specialised consultations for glaucoma, Mr. Biswas is also available for consultations in general ophthalmology and carrying out various minor ophthalmic procedures. He values good communication and is passionate about the quality of care for his patients.
